Cascading Waterfalls - Sheng-Hsien Kao’s Ink Creations

Sheng-Hsien Kao, a skilled Ink Master from Southern Taiwan, has demonstrated remarkable creative prowess since his youth and has garnered numerous major national art awards. His artworks have graced prestigious venues such as the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Japan, Tainan Art Museum, and are part of the esteemed Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts collection. He stands as one of the foremost artists in Southern Taiwan.

Viewing artistic creation as his lifelong mission, Artist Sheng-Hsien Kao has cultivated himself with a humble attitude, diligently studying and specializing in ink art, persistently, for over fifty years, ultimately achieving great accomplishments. Incorporating traditional brush techniques from the Song and Yuan dynasties to modern innovations, Kao constantly refines and breaks through, imbuing each work with unique character and style. Regarding creative themes, Sheng-Hsien Kao initially concentrated on ink bamboo during his early stages, characterized by a tranquil and expansive style that conveyed serene and lyrical imagery. As his art progressed into the middle period, influenced by various mentors, he gradually transitioned to subjects such as flowers, birds, landscapes, and bold colors, utilizing vibrant hues and layers to create works that uniquely embodied a poetic and artistic beauty. After retiring from teaching in 2001, Sheng-Hsien, striving for excellence in the artistic realm, shed his identity as an artist and pursued a Master’s degree at the Department of Visual Arts, National Pingtung University, delving into comprehensive art theories and Eastern-Western aesthetics. Additionally, to solidify his artistic expressions and draw inspiration, he extensively engaged in plein air sketching with fellow artists during his studies, immersing himself in mountains, seas, rivers, observing topographies, and experiencing local customs and culture across more than 50 countries. Therefore, his works in the past decade have primarily focused on landscapes including mountains, waterfalls, ocean waves, clouds, terraces, and more. Under Kao’s brush, his waterfall pieces vividly come to life, exuding dynamic energy; his terraced landscapes undulate with precision, showcasing distinct and rich layers, embodying a harmonious fusion of emotion and environment, revealing the mystical unity of humans and nature in towering mountains and flowing waters.

The exhibition “Cascading Waterfalls - Sheng-Hsien Kao’s Ink Creations” is expected to showcase 23 ink artworks. We hope to share the unique beauty of our featured landscapes with travelers at the departure airport through these artworks, while also expressing the artist’s love and appreciation for life and the land.
