The exhibition Sea, Island, People

2025.03.26 - 2026.03.31

The exhibition Sea, Island, People—The Story of Taiwan is rooted in the New Taiwan History Movement, aiming to retell Taiwan’s history.

Specifically, the sea represents Taiwan’s connection to the world; the island symbolizes the interaction between humans and various species; and the people embody the interwoven diversity of ethnic groups. Through this perspective, Taiwan is portrayed as a historical stage that carries the stories of different peoples, eras, and cultures.

The exhibition unfolds through an overarching narrative, an ecological overview, and a two-sided human wall, complemented by a ground-level marine section. Together, these elements explore Taiwan’s history as shaped by the dynamic interplay of sea, island, and people.

At ground level, a world map and marine ecology take center stage, employing the concept of “unboxing an island” to illustrate Taiwan’s historical global connections—from Penghu to Amsterdam, Lambai Island to Jakarta, and beyond.

The four exhibition walls guide visitors through the New Taiwan History Movement and the broader historical narrative. Using silhouetted symbols as a visual motif, the exhibit interweaves the presence of Indigenous peoples, new immigrants, women, and foreigners in Taiwan’s past.

Through this multidirectional presentation, visitors come to see that Taiwan’s history is not the story of a single ethnic group or heroic figures—it is a collective narrative shaped by multiple ethnic groups, cultures and perspectives. At the same time, this approach echoes the goal of the New Taiwan History Movement —to inspire people to rediscover Taiwan’s history from a global perspective.
